There are some concerns about the safety conditions for this Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Emergency services in Miami-Dade County have been battling a brush fire for the past 24 hours. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to calls about a grass fire on Tuesday afternoon. Heavy winds only made this situation worse, leading to multiple road shutting down. On Wednesday, U.S. 1 southbound and Card Sound Road were shut down because the flames were out of control.
"This is the driest and windiest part of the day so the fire apparently has jumped U.S. 1 just like it did yesterday. Maybe not quite as intensely, but nonetheless there is fire on both sides of US1 and we have several air assets on it trying to put it out," Kevin MacEwen of Florida Forest Service said, via NBC Miami.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is working with Florida Forest Service to contain this brush fire, which is approximately 4,000 acres.
"Although the fire is not near any commercial or residential areas, we urge our community to stay informed about any possible road closures and stay safe," Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said in a statement.
It's too early to tell if this brush fire will impact this weekend's NASCAR race in Homestead, Florida. Obviously, the main concern right now is that everyone stays safe.
Unfortunately, a red flag fire warning has been issued for South Florida this Thursday.
We're hoping Florida Forest Service and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue makes significant progress over the next 24 hours.
