NASCAR champion says he used a fake birth certificate to race as a kid

Even as a young kid, Joey Logano knew he wanted to be a race car driver.

Like many kids with that same dream, he began racing at a very young age. Logano was 6 years old when he began racing quarter midgets in his home state of Connecticut.

But a few years later, as his talent began to become more apparent, Logano and his father, Tom, needed a way to ensure Logano was racing against fierce competition.

On Thursday's episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live," Logano — now a three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion at age 35 — explained how he and his dad made sure he was racing against those who would actually present him a challenge.

"You had to be a certain age to drive certain kinds of cars," Logano said. "My dad wanted to move me up. We made our own birth certificate ... This was to say I was older. The day I turned 10, I turned 12, then I started racing Legend cars."

"It worked for a while," he explained. "We had a guy on the inside who helped set the whole thing up and put this in my file. He forgot to take the old birth certificate out. So the rumors start flying around he's not really 12, he's only 10. I would just lie about it every time someone asked me. One day, someone looked at my file. Two birth certificates, no more fun."

But Logano's father wasn't deterred. In fact, father and son tried the trick again a few years later.

"I wrecked one time, got in the ambulance," Logano said. "This was another series that we tried the same birth certificate thing again. They're checking me out and all this stuff. They ask, 'How old are you?' I go, '15.' My dad says, 'He's fine.' I was only 13. That was the moment he knew I was fine."

It's safe to say things worked out alright for Logano, who will make his 600th NASCAR Cup Series start at Dover Motor Speedway on Sunday and has 37 Cup Series wins, three championships and a Daytona 500 win to his credit.
