NASCAR's Jimmie Johnson may delay retirement, return in 2021

Jimmie Johnson was supposed to take the track for the last time in 2020 during the NASCAR Cup Series, but with the COVID-19 outbreak postponing races, Johnson may delay his retirement until 2021.

However, the Chevrolet driver noted he's not sure what his future holds or if he'll truly consider putting off retirement.

“I don’t know,” the 44-year-old driver told For The Win, according to Michelle R. Martinelli. “I wouldn’t know yet.”

Johnson's primary sponsor, Ally Financial, is onboard through the 2023 season, and Hendrick Motorsports has yet to announce his replacement, so if Johnson wants to continue racing, he can do so with the support of his sponsor.

“Honestly, I feel like Mr. Hendrick doesn’t want to see me step away yet, Ally is signed up through 2023 — there are all these things that are there that I think would give me the opportunity to do it,” Johnson said when pressed about the idea of coming back in 2021 for what would hopefully be a normal season.

“But I haven’t had any of those discussions. I think the opportunity could be there for me. We’ll just have to see how things unfold.”

NASCAR’s race weekends at Atlanta, Homestead, Texas Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway, Talladega Superspeedway and Dover International Speedway have been postponed, but Johnson has been competing in the virtual iRacing series.

If the seven-time NASCAR Cup champion doesn't return after this season, at least he'll go out a winner.
