Quaker State 400 weather delay: When Cup Series race will resume at Atlanta
Mandatory Credit: Jason Allen-Imagn Images

Oh no…rain. Just what NASCAR was hoping to avoid in Atlanta for the Quaker State 400. Now, we wait for the weather. On one hand, rain means a caution. But it doesn’t mean an automatic 30-minute delay like a lightning strike does.

NASCAR will try to get the Quaker State 400 back on track. There was a caution thrown on Lap 37 for rain. Hopefully, track drying won’t really be necessary. It should be hot enough for a light rain to dry up without much help.

Hold tight, folks. We are going to wait this one out. It is a night race at Atlanta and that means we have lights on the track. EchoPark Speedway could be open late tonight.

Track officials have told fans that they should stay tuned to the PA system. There seems to be a hope that racing will be back underway soon enough. It all depends on what Mother Nature wants to do.

This NASCAR weekend in Atlanta has had weather issues. Mostly lightning. Now we have rain. Atlanta is a tricky place to race at in the summer. The humidity and heat start to mix, and then you get pop-up showers and thunderstorms. Such is the weather in the south.

The racing has been very interesting so far in Stage 1. We should be seeing tight, pack racing. Instead, the field strung out fairly far. The handling on the track is making it difficult to stay in those tight packs. A bit of an old-school superspeedway race in that way. I think that style of racing is going to make for a very exciting even tonight.

Quaker State 400 hit by rain after interesting start

Joey Logano has led from the jump. Team Penske had their cars all up front, including Josh Berry from the Wood Brothers. That group knows how to control these drafting races when they have a pack up front. Berry and Logano have almost been tandem drafting with each other.

Before the caution for the rain, things did start to come back together. Logano started to lose grip. So, the field caught up. There were still big gaps between cars, and that could create runs throughout the race that make this very exciting later on.

Besides the Ford and Penske dominance early on, Carson Hocevar is driving like he stole it again. He loves this Atlanta track. He went from P30 to as high as P6 at one point in the opening stint. You never know what might happen with the 77 up in the mix.
