There was a guise of infallibility regarding NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series driver Austin Hill and his ability to consistently beat his competitors in drafting races.
Hill led the most laps (34) in Saturday's race at EchoPark Speedway, a track where he had won in five of his eight starts. After struggling in qualifying and starting 20th, it looked like he was headed towards a sixth victory at his home track.
But Ross Chastain had other plans. As Hill led the pack down the backstretch on the final lap, a late block from Hill on Chastain sent Hill spinning in turn 3. Sheldon Creed went on to score his first career win, while Hill was relegated to a 12th-place finish.
It was a heartbreaking way for Hill's race to end, but it proved that he is beatable in superspeedway races.

"It's superspeedway racing," Hill told Fox Sports' Bob Pockrass post-race. "Sometimes you're going to win the race, sometimes you're going to end up on the hook. Luckily, I was dead sideways, saved the car [and] came home with a 12th-place finish. God, it stings when you lose them that way."
Despite his crushing loss, Hill was still happy for Creed, who was his teammate at Richard Childress Racing during the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
Chastain, a full-time driver for Trackhouse Racing in the NASCAR Cup Series, was the man who sent the final lap of Saturday's race in a different direction.
As Hill spun, Creed took the lead from Chastain, who was swallowed up by the pack and finished sixth driving the No. 32 Chevrolet for Jordan Anderson Racing.
"It's the strongest car at these tracks," Chastain told Pockrass post-race regarding Hill. "When the 21 got into second clear of the 00, I knew I was in trouble, but I still fought him off for a little bit."
Hill was not particularly appreciative of Chastain's last-lap move.
"When Ross is behind you, I expect to get put firewall deep in the wall," Hill said post-race, per Matt Weaver. "That's just the things he does. He got in my left rear and just didn't lift. It's the last lap, I wouldn't lift either. Unfortunately, we lost the race. He didn't win the race either."
At the very least, the NOAPS field showed that Hill can be beaten in the draft. That could lead to the field being more aggressive at Talladega on April 25, where Hill will undoubtedly be fast and up front again at a superspeedway race.
