For the second straight week, Ryan Blaney might be the driver with the best shot at matching Shane van Gisbergen on speed at a road course.
Blaney was fastest in NASCAR Cup Series practice at Sonoma Raceway on Saturday afternoon, laying down a fastest lap of 75.808 seconds around the 1.99-mile California road course.
Van Gisbergen was the fastest driver in the first 18-driver group of practice before Blaney took the top spot in group two.
Defending Cup champion and two-time Sonoma winner Kyle Larson was second, with points leader Tyler Reddick, Bubba Wallace and van Gisbergen rounding out the top five. Ty Gibbs, Ross Chastain, Chase Briscoe, AJ Allmendinger and William Byron completed the top 10.
Other notable practice results include Chris Buescher in 11th, Daniel Suarez in 14th, Carson Hocevar in 16th, Denny Hamlin in 17th and Chase Elliott in 19th. Cody Ware was the slowest driver in the session, placing 36th on the speed chart with a fastest lap of 78.350 seconds.
The session was largely devoid of incidents, save for a spin by Allmendinger in the closing seconds and a couple of spins for Erik Jones. Jones' No. 43 did have minor damage.
Cup Series qualifying is next on truTV. Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350 will go green shortly after 3:30 p.m. ET, with coverage on TNT, PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
