Shane van Gisbergen‘s crew suffered from a wild accident last weekend in Pocono. The veteran’s crew member responsible for changing rear tires, JP Kealey, was brutally hit with a tire and suffered severe injuries. Now, as NASCAR takes the grand circus over to Atlanta, Gisbergen provides a much-awaited update on Kealey following the serious accident in the previous week.
JP Kealey’s accident was very serious, as he is now set to miss the Atlanta race week. Shane van Gisbergen‘s crew will witness a new crew person as Kealey will fully focus on recovering from the injuries. Gisbergen now reveals the long list of injuries the tire changer faced as he hopes for a speedy recovery for the latter by the upcoming race weekends.
Shane van Gisbergen revealed that JP Kealey suffered from a fractured rib in the aftermath of the incident. Moreover, Kealey also sustained a partially punctured lung, which is a very serious injury. As such, Gisbergen insisted that the 30-year-old would take a couple of weeks off and hopefully recover fully by the Grant Park 165 in Chicago and help the team get up to speed.
So he had a fractured rib, I think, and a partially punctured lung, So, yeah, a couple of weeks off. Is the plan for Chicago? … But yeah, back home now.
Shane van Gisbergen told CBS Sports.
Shane van Gisbergen recalled the time when he injured himself and broke ribs due to the accident. The 36-year-old asserted that the feeling is not nice, as recovery can take very long for severe cases. As such, Gisbergen asked JP Kealey to take as long as he needed to fully recover from the injuries during the race. The veteran hopes to see Kealey back and stronger than ever soon, as the Trackhouse Racing rushes to find a replacement for the tire changer.
Yeah, I’ve done ribs myself it’s not real fun. So, go take it easy for as long as he needs and come back when he’s good to go.
Shane van Gisbergen added.
Trackhouse Racing has already locked on the replacement for JP Kealey as he recovers in a hospital. Shane van Gisbergen revealed that the team decided to go ahead with Noel ‘Bud’ Merrill Jr. as the best replacement for the injured member. Ahead of the Atlanta race, the veteran reveals the strong suit of Bud and just how useful he will be for the team.
Shane van Gisbergen asserted that he was glad that Trackhouse Racing had Noel Merrill Jr. available to replace the injured crew member. The 36-year-old recalled that when a couple of staff members were penalized, Budd replaced them back then as well. As such, the new member is really capable, too, as the team doesn’t think twice about their decision. It is all up to Gisbergen to put up a show in Atlanta now and come up as a great contender for the race win.
We have Bud. When the guys had the penalty a couple of months ago, Bud was on our car then. He’s really capable, too, so it should be good.
Shane van Gisbergen added.
SVG has already locked his position in the playoffs following two coveted victories in Cup Races this season. The 36-year-old will now aim to improve in terms of results from this point forward. Gisbergen is coming from a recent road course win in Mexico, as he will have to work hard to keep up with the winning pace. As things currently are, he could be a serious contender for the championship this season.
