Denny Hamlin and his team did not have the happiest of Memorial Days.
On Monday, NASCAR announced via an official press release that Chris Gabehart, Hamlin's crew chief, car chief Brandon Griffeth, and engineer Scott Simmons have been banned for four Cup Series points races through June 10 after a tungsten weight came loose from Hamlin's car right before the start of Sunday's Coca-Cola 600.
According to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Joe Gibbs Racing won't appeal NASCAR's ruling.
The AP added that the tungsten ensures a car meets the weight requirement for competing in the Series.
The malfunction that results in an automatic four-race suspension forced Hamlin onto pit road before he could obtain momentum during the opening minutes of the race. He finished 29th.
The three team members will miss events at Charlotte, Bristol, Atlanta, and Martinsville as NASCAR attempts to make up for lost time accumulated during the coronavirus pandemic that halted the season in March.
