Todd Gilliland knows where he'd like to see a NASCAR street race

As the NASCAR Cup Series prepares to race on the streets of Chicago for the third time on July 6, the future of a street race in the Windy City is up in the air.

2025 is the final year of a three-year deal that was signed by NASCAR and the city to bring NASCAR's first street race to the most populous city in Illinois, but street racing appears to be a discipline of racing that NASCAR would like to see remain on the schedule.

While reports have surfaced that a street race in San Diego is potentially on the table, Cup Series driver Todd Gilliland voiced his support for NASCAR taking a street race to new markets.

"All the talks are interesting," Gilliland said during a media call on Wednesday. "I think it's fun to go different places. I don't think we could get close to (Los Angeles) with the traffic that we had when we went to the (LA) Coliseum. We'd have to close down a lot of streets for that."

While Gilliland doesn't see Los Angeles as a viable option, another city across the country is one he appears to be fixated on.

"I think New York City would be sick," Gilliland said. "Obviously, there's the views, (and) the feel of that city is massive. That would be my pick."

Gilliland's idea is one that NASCAR has reportedly considered. NASCAR has shown its ability to attract fans in the state of New York, as the annual race weekend at Watkins Glen - a facility that has been a staple of road course racing across many different disciplines of motorsport - routinely draws big crowds.
