As Chase Briscoe celebrated his victory in Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at Talladega Superspeedway, another, more subdued celebration was taking place on pit road.
That was because Todd Gilliland, the son of former Cup Series driver David Gilliland, had just scored a career-best finish of second on Sunday.
Ironically, David Gilliland's career-best finish was also a runner-up finish at Talladega, coming in the spring of 2013 in a race won by David Gilliland's then-teammate at Front Row Motorsports, David Ragan.
Todd — who is in his fourth year driving in the Cup Series for Front Row — and David Gilliland will now go down in the history books together — for the moment at least.
"All around, (a) really good day," Todd Gilliland told Steven Taranto of CBS Sports. "Good to be in contention to win, leading laps there as the end, and the last couple laps the seas kinda parted for us perfectly and I was able to get up to second."
Todd Gilliland said his dad told him he was proud of him. He ties his father's best ever Cup finish of second at Sonoma in 2008.

Todd always looked forward to Talladega growing up because he knew it was his dad's chance to win. But he really didn't want the third lane to get… https://t.co/giMBKBaejl pic.twitter.com/hNViGCsGAe
Through 34 of 36 races in the 2025 season, Gilliland is 29th in the Cup Series standings with four top 10 finishes. His second-place result on Sunday is his first top-five of 2025.
