Ty Gibbs might’ve been the only wheelman who could’ve challenged Shane van Gisbergen in Mexico City. Unfortunately, an untimely caution ruined any chance of him getting to Victory Lane on Sunday.
It was still an impressive day for the young Joe Gibbs Racing driver. Gibbs finished P11 on the afternoon, as he’s beginning to string together some positive performances after a tough start to the season. Still, a win is what he wants, as he’s yet to take the checkered flag home in the Cup Series.
After the dust settled on Sunday’s race, Gibbs aired out a bit of frustration. He was disappointed with the restarts throughout the race, believing that’s where his day took a turn. Still, he kept everything in perspective, believing the No. 54 team will put it together sooner rather than later.
“I don’t know what they do on restarts where they check everybody up and then everyone just rails each other,” Gibbs stated, via NBC Sports. “That is where I got a little nose damage, unfortunately. Sometimes life just doesn’t work out for you. You just have to keep digging.”
At the least, Gibbs isn’t making any excuses. He recognizes that he plays a role in his destiny, and it’ll be up to him to get his team their first win with him as their driver. Until then, he’s just going to put his nose down and work.
“You can’t change anything. You can’t change [how Carson Hocevar] couldn’t fire it back up. He sat there it seemed like for a while. Maybe he waited for a caution. I don’t know. It’s just unfortunate,” Gibbs added, via RACER. “We’ll keep digging and take what we got. We had a fast race car and didn’t win, but sometimes, it just happens.”
Following Sunday’s race, Gibbs is P24 in the overall point standings. He’s 308 points behind the leader, amassing three top tens and two top fives on the season to this point. Additionally, Gibbs has two DNFs, and only 65 laps led in 2025.
Perhaps Pocono will be a little more fruitful for him. And then there’s always Atlanta, the Chicago Street Race or Sonoma. There’s some tracks where Gibbs could make a major impact over the next couple of weeks.
Time will tell if he’s able to get his first win of his career and lock himself into the playoffs. Ty Gibbs certainly has talent, and he’s shown it throughout his Cup Series tenure. He just needs to take the next step.
