Ty Gibbs seemed to be in business during the final stage in Mexico City on Sunday. However, a late caution brought out by Carson Hocevar put a damper on his chance to win, and he had to settle for a P11 finish.
Evidently, the 22-year old Joe Gibbs Racing wheelman wasn’t pleased with Hocevar’s trouble leading to a yellow. Speaking with the media following the race, Gibbs delivered a pointed comment in his peer’s direction, while also offering a word of hope for the remainder of his 2025 season.
“You can’t change anything. You can’t change [how Hocevar] couldn’t fire it back up. He sat there it seemed like for a while. Maybe he waited for a caution. I don’t know. It’s just unfortunate,” Gibbs added, via RACER. “We’ll keep digging and take what we got. We had a fast race car and didn’t win, but sometimes, it just happens.”
Alas, it’s easy to see why Gibbs was a bit frustrated following the race. He was disappointed with the restarts throughout the race as well, believing that’s where his day took a turn: “I don’t know what they do on restarts where they check everybody up and then everyone just rails each other,” Gibbs added, via NBC Sports.
“That is where I got a little nose damage, unfortunately. Sometimes life just doesn’t work out for you. You just have to keep digging.”
Regardless, Gibbs isn’t making any excuses. He recognizes that he plays a role in his destiny, and it’ll be up to him to get his team their first win with him as their driver. Until then, he’s just going to put his nose down and work.
Following Sunday’s race, Gibbs is P24 in the overall point standings. He’s 308 points behind the leader, amassing three top tens and two top fives on the season to this point. Additionally, Gibbs has two DNFs, and only 65 laps led in 2025.
Perhaps Pocono will be a little more fruitful for him. And then there’s always Atlanta, the Chicago Street Race or Sonoma. There’s some tracks where Gibbs could make a major impact over the next couple of weeks.
One thing is for sure, Ty Gibbs is going to be watching Carson Hocevar with a keen eye, like a couple of others drivers have done throughout the season. Both wheelman are fast. We’ll see who gets Cup Series win No. 1 first between the two.
