The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season for Ty Gibbs has been a challenging one to say the least. After making the playoffs for the first time of his career in 2024, it’ll take a miracle — more specifically, a win in the regular-season finale at Daytona — for the No. 54 driver to make consecutive appearances in the postseason.
Through 25 races this year with first-year crew chief Tyler Allen, , the 22-year-old has recorded six top 10s and four top 5s. That first career win has remained elusive after 112 starts.
The only car from Joe Gibbs Racing not in the playoffs and naturally frustrations have been high. That was evident at Iowa when the driver got into a tense radio exchange with JGR Competition Director Chris Gabehart, who has also served as his de facto crew chief in recent weeks.
On Saturday night at Richmond Raceway, the two had a much more positive conversation and the driver showed they were on the same page, confirming his understanding of the upcoming pit strategy call by Gabehart: “ Yep, right with you," he said. "Having fun.”
A short time later, unexpected communication from the 23XI Racing radio of Corey Heim’s crew chief could be heard on the No. 54 channel.

“ I got Bootie Barker's radio channel on mine as well,” Gibbs relayed. “We running some split radios or what?”
“Boy, I don’t know about that,” Gabehart replied. “That’s some sort of frequency issue somebody above me will have to figure out.”
“Tell Bootie to shut up,” the driver said with a laugh. “He’s screaming on my radio.”
“Is that the first time you’ve heard him or have you been hearing him?” the crew chief asked.
“I’ve been hearing him," Gibbs answered.
The interference didn't bother the No. 54 pilot who finished 18th and secured his first top-20 result in four races.
