Why 23XI Racing choosing Herbst over Heim for a third car is a mistake

Why 23XI Racing choosing Riley Herbst over Corey Heim for a third car would be a mistake

It appears a new driver has thrown his hat in the ring for a NASCAR Cup Series ride with 23XI Racing.

According to NASCAR insider Lee Spencer, NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Riley Herbst could be the choice to drive 23XI Racing's third car, provided the team purchases a charter, as it has been rumored to do.

"We kind of have to think that one charter is going to Trackhouse, and one is going to 23XI," Spencer said. One name that has been mentioned (for 23XI) is Riley Herbst. Riley Herbst has the Monster (Energy) sponsorship. You would have that (sponsorship) all in house, which would be a nice little package between Joe Gibbs Racing and 23XI. That's all the little bits and pieces."

As Spencer noted, Herbst has enjoyed unwavering support from Monster Energy during his time in NASCAR, with Monster providing primary sponsorship for Herbst during his tenure in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

While Herbst would bring sponsorship — which is easily the most important component of any race team — to 23XI, the move would be quite confusing, especially considering 23XI's past actions in free agency.

Following the prolonged injury of Kurt Busch during the 2022 season, 23XI racing co-owner Denny Hamlin was seeking a long-term option to put in 23XI's new second car. Wanting a top young talent, Hamlin signed Tyler Reddick for the 2024 season, making it clear that Reddick was his top choice.

Not only did Hamlin go and get one of the best drivers in the sport, but he also bought out the remaining year that Reddick had left on his contract with Richard Childress Racing.

Hamlin knew which driver he wanted, signed that driver and then bought said driver out of his contract so he could join the team one year early. The partnership has been a happy one, as Reddick has three wins with the team and finished sixth in points in 2023.

So why exactly would Hamlin go through the process of buying a charter, setting up a third team and then proceeding to hire a 25-year-old driver who is not ready for the bright lights of Cup Series racing?

While Herbst has been respectable in four full-time seasons of Xfinity Series competition, he only has one win, and his best points finish is a pedestrian 10th place. Those certainly aren't horrible numbers, but for a driver who's seen the best equipment the series has to offer, they're disappointing.

Herbst's resume pales in comparison to that of 21-year-old Corey Heim, who in just 53 Truck Series starts, has nine wins, 26 top-fives and 39 top-10s. Heim will drive a third 23XI Racing car in a one-off at Nashville on June 30, piloting the No. 50 Camry for Hamlin and Michael Jordan.

Aside from pure statistics, the question of Herbst's upside also has to be asked. If put in a championship-caliber car with 23XI, what is his ceiling? Could he match the numbers of the high-flying Reddick or Bubba Wallace, who has blossomed into a playoff-caliber driver?

So far, his ordinary results in the Xfinity Series competition do nothing to suggest he would. Heim, on the other hand, only seems to be getting better and has turned the Truck Series into his playground with one of its most competitive fields in recent memory.

The question of who Denny Hamlin and Michael Jordan choose to put in a third car — if 23XI elects to buy a charter — likely won't be answered for months, but one thing seems clear: opting for money over talent would be the wrong decision in the long run.

NASCAR insiders weigh in after Austin Hill's controversial move

Austin Hill's controversial move in the closing laps of Saturday's NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway has already been the topic of much discussion among those in the NASCAR industry. Hill appeared to intentionally wreck Aric Almirola on Lap 91 of the Pennzoil 250 after Almirola had gotten Hill loose in the previous corner during a battle for fourth place. While Hill was given a five-lap penalty for reckless driving, a suspension for the Aug. 2 race at Iowa Speedway could be in order. "I... you can see his gloves through the front windshield... and to be doing that at Indianapolis Motor Speedway of all places, is just not good," said Joseph Srigley of TobyChristie.com. "That should probably be a suspension, at least for next weekend at Iowa, if not longer. Yikes..." "Yeah, that’s probably gonna be a forced vacation for Austin Hill," said Christie. "Pretty egregious looking, and at a track like Indy, that’s a very dangerous move." "Maaaaaan not sure that's gonna hold up in NASCAR Court," said Eric Estepp of "Out of The Groove" in response to Hill's radio transmission. Hill told his team that he couldn't hang on to his car after the aforementioned contact from Almirola, though it appeared that the No. 21 Chevrolet was stable for a brief moment before he made contact with Almirola's No. 19. A suspension for Hill would also relieve the No. 21 team of all its playoff points, including any they might earn over the final five races of the regular season. Hill has won three races so far this season.

Lakers Pegged as Landing Spot for Ex-Celtics Guard Named Top Free Agency 'Steal'

The Los Angeles Lakers are working on building a contender around last season's blockbuster addition of Luka Doncic, and could have their eyes on a player named the biggest "steal" of free agency. James Herbert of CBS Sports noted that former Boston Celtics star Malcolm Brogdon is still looking for his next NBA home and could be a bargain for a team that lands him. "After a couple of years in Portland and Washington, it feels like it's time for the veteran guard to get back on a winning team," Herbert wrote. "If healthy, he could be a real bargain for a contender -- it was only two years ago that he won Sixth Man of the Year in Boston." Bleacher Report's Timothy Rapp named the Lakers as a team to watch for Brogdon, who has shared his admiration for Lakers star LeBron James in the past. Speaking to Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, the former NBA Rookie of the Year said he believes James is the greatest of all time and disagrees with those who use his longevity as an argument against him. “At 40, I think that LeBron is playing at a higher level, but I think medicine and I think science has come a long way,” Brogdon said. “But I think also longevity has to be counted for LeBron. He’s the first player in this game to have longevity that is counted against him, you know? It’s one of his downfalls.” Brodgon was a solid contributor for the Washington Wizards last season, scoring 12.7 points with 3.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.

All signs point to Yankees moving on from Anthony Volpe

All signs point to Yankees moving on from Anthony Volpe

With the trade for Ryan McMahon now complete, it would seem New York Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman has fulfilled one of his three priorities. He can now cross third base off the list, which leaves the rotation and bullpen as his remaining priorities. However, according to one Yankees writer, Cashman might not be done with the infield. Chris Kirschner of The Athletic reported this after the McMahon trade: “The Yankees may not be done adding to their infield. A team source said the Yankees are interested in adding a right-handed hitter who could play the infield.” Kirschner adds that the Yankees have had interest in Willi Castro and Amed Rosario. But the question now is, how would another player fit in the Yankees’ infield? Needless to say, Paul Goldschmidt and Jazz Chisholm Jr. aren’t going anywhere, and McMahon is just getting there. That leaves the low-hanging fruit. Anthony Volpe has been at the center of controversy all this season. His 13 errors, many of which had come at make-or-break moments, amount to the second-highest total in the game. In addition, his bat has not been able to compensate, hitting .214/.286/.407 with 14 home runs. There was always a lot to like about Volpe. He won a Gold Glove in his rookie year, his power has always been promising and his speed is nothing to scoff at. Unfortunately, his glove has become a liability and his speed has also produced very few results. Volpe has swiped just 10 bags in 17 attempts. His power is the one thing that still has some upside, but it hasn’t been enough to justify a spot in the lineup. Both Castro and Rosario have been far more productive at the plate this season than Volpe. Kirschner doesn’t clarify how serious the Yankees are in their pursuit of another infielder, but that most likely isn’t available information. Having just turned 24, Volpe could still become the type of player that was expected from him as a top prospect. However, his recent performance has weighed heavily on his team’s efforts and it may be buying him a ticket out of the Bronx — or at least a spot on the bench.

Quinn Ewers’ Camp Performance Forces Dolphins Into Tough QB Decision

Being the backup quarterback isn't necessarily the most exciting role for anyone, but for a team like the Miami Dolphins, where starter Tua Tagovailoa has suffered four concussions since entering the NFL in 2020, it could be vital. As of now, a clear battle for that spot has formed between rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers and veteran former first-round selection Zach Wilson as they go head-to-head. Of course, training camp is where these kinds of questions can be solved, and so far, it appears that Ewers has done a good job in putting his best foot forward. On Friday, David Furones of the Sun Sentinel gave a very positive update on the young quarterback, stating, "Dolphins rookie QB Quinn Ewers had a strong third practice of training camp. Made several impressive, big-time throws." The update sparked conversations among many fans, both supporting Ewers and a serious showing that there's interest in seeing who comes out on top. "Show ‘em, Quinn," said one comment. "He just does a lot of things (anticipatory throws, timing throws, MOTF accuracy, etc.) that fit this system much better than what Wilson does. I think with refinement and development we could have a backup in Miami that can operate the offense efficiently…finally," said another. "Love to hear it!" a third added. A fourth stated, "I'd be surprised if he's not the backup.." "I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Quinn Ewers has the physical tools to stick at the next level. It’s just a matter of shaping the rest," a fifth continued. "That’s QB2 potential QB1 in the future Glad we drafted Ewers," said another. Another big test for both Ewers and Wilson will be during the Dolphins' three preseason games, as the coaching staff will get a much better look at how these two perform during live matchups. Luckily for both, though, being the backup is all they're truly fighting for, as Kyle Crabbs of A to Z Sports predicts that each will make the final 53-man roster, with cuts needing to be made by Aug. 27.
