Why Kyle Busch remains optimistic despite playoff uncertainty

For the second year in a row, two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch finds himself on the outside looking in as the regular season draws to a close.

With only three races left before the playoffs begin at Darlington Raceway on Aug. 31, Busch sits 18th in the standings, 73 points behind RFK Racing's Chris Buescher for the final playoff spot.

Despite another frustrating season behind the wheel that has him facing a must-win scenario just to make the playoffs, Busch is not losing any confidence and remains optimistic that he can win his way into the postseason field.

"I've won at all those places, so let's go do it again, right? You know, Watkins Glen is probably my favorite road course we go to, Richmond is statistically one of my best racetracks that we go to and Daytona has been one of our best racetracks since I have been at RCR with Team Chevrolet," Busch said in an interview with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

"So, I feel really good about our opportunities in the next three weeks. It's all about execution and being able to do our job right and that includes me going out there, setting some fast laps and being in control and being able to do that and then having good pit stops on pit road and having good strategy and the race kind of fall our way. It seems like that's more the case these days than having a fast car and driving up through the field. That doesn't seem to be the case as much anymore."

If past history is any indication, the next three races line up well for Busch. He has a combined nine wins at those tracks, including six wins at Richmond, which ranks first among active drivers.

While Busch has done everything but win at Daytona since joining Richard Childress Racing in 2023, Watkins Glen and Richmond have not gone as smooth for him in recent years. Busch was outside the top 10 in both Richmond races last season and finished 30th at the Watkins Glen road course.

The short track program is still not where it needs to be at RCR, but Austin Dillon's 10th-place finish at Iowa and Busch's ability to rally from going a lap down in a backup car were a step in the right direction on Sunday.

Road and street courses have arguably been the organization's best track type this season, with Busch recording three top 10s in the four races so far. If he can avoid the "Big One" that is sure to present itself at Daytona, he should be in contention there.

It all comes back to execution like Busch alluded to. He is not in an ideal situation, but if the No. 8 team can stay out of trouble and not beat themselves, it would not be a huge surprise if Busch wins his way into the playoffs.
