In the 2021 offseason, the Chicago Bulls traded their 2025 draft pick to the San Antonio Spurs, however the pick had a two-year protection in case it wasn’t conveyed as intended. Once the Bulls recognized it was time for a change, they traded to reclaim their pick, regaining the opportunity to draft a potential star.
Derik Queen and Khaman Maluach have dominated draft discussions surrounding big players, leaving Asa Newell as the overlooked candidate, but he made a significant impression in the NCAA tournament.
Bio: Freshman | Forward | Georgia | 6'11" | 220 pounds
Stats: 15.4 points | 6.9 rebounds | 0.9 assists | 54.3 FG% | 29.2 3P% | 2.7 3PA | 74.8 FT% | 1.0 steals | 1.0 blocks | 1.1 turnovers | (33 games played)
Newell is among the few draft prospects prepared for the physicality of the NBA. He excels in the paint, regardless of the defensive pressure. Newell is a versatile play-finisher who doesn’t require the ideal pass to get his shot off. He’s also an exceptional screener and a determined rebounder. Newell’s potential lies in his shooting and playmaking abilities. He has already established himself as one of the most versatile defenders in the draft.

Although Newell primarily plays as a forward, Nicolas Claxton, a center, serves as a useful comparison. Both players are effective at scoring near the basket and possess some playmaking skills.
While Newell may not be the same level of rim protector that Claxton was in his final year of college, Newell compensates for this with his ability to guard on the perimeter. Additionally, Newell’s free-throw percentage indicates that he has shown more offensive potential than Claxton, who has yet to make significant progress in that area.
He can easily secure regular rotation minutes on teams needing frontcourt assistance. Ideally, Newell won’t be limited to playing center for the Bulls, as coach Billy Donovan prefers smaller lineups. Newell can help offset Buzelis’s lack of size and take on more physical responsibilities. Offensively, Josh Giddey can set Newell up for easy points in pick-and-roll situations. Newell’s primary concern with the Bulls will be finding a new number since Buzelis currently wears 14.
