The Philadelphia 76ers have one of the best backcourts in the NBA led by point guard Tyrese Maxey and shooting guard VJ Edgecombe. Selected third overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, Edgecombe has lived up to expectations immediately in Philadelphia, emerging as a key part of the rotation.
He has done that by blending scoring, rebounding and defensive activity in a way that fits perfectly next to Maxey’s pace and shot creation. He has thrived so well that Philadelphia moved on from Jared McCain at the trade deadline, last year’s first‑round selection, thanks to their trust in Edgecombe’s ability to keep developing.
Through his first 56 games, the 20‑year‑old former Baylor standout has averaged 15.5 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting 43.0% from the field and 36.3% from beyond the arc.
The 76ers got off to a rough start on Tuesday against the San Antonio Spurs, one of the best teams in the Western Conference.
Edgecombe struggled early as well, shooting 2‑of‑9 from the field through his first 20 minutes, though he still contributed with four rebounds, one assist, one steal and two blocks.
It was not enough to make a meaningful difference, however, as Philadelphia trailed by 25 at halftime. To make matters worse, Edgecombe was nowhere to be seen when the third quarter began after he took a visibly hard fall to end the first half.
His backup, Cameron Payne, started in his place. Moments later, the 76ers announced Edgecombe would not return to the game due to lower back soreness (h/t Noah Levick of NBC Sports Philadelphia).

The update carries real weight for Philadelphia because Edgecombe has become essential to their two‑way identity, providing scoring, size and defensive versatility that the roster cannot easily replace.
The 76ers currently sit sixth in the East, and any stretch without a starter could push them into the play‑in race, especially with Paul George still out while serving his 25‑game suspension.
Losing another backcourt piece only tightens the margin for error. Edgecombe’s status will continue to be monitored closely, as Philadelphia may have to navigate a critical portion of the season without one of its most important young contributors.
