LeBron James is willing to play out the final year of his two-year, $101.35 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. Over the weekend, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that James picked up his $52.6 million player option to stay with the Lakers. At the 2025-26 season, the four-time champion will make history by being the first player to play in 23 seasons in the NBA.

While he’s 40, James is determined to contend for the championship. The Lakers, on the other hand, have been working hard to try to surround the league’s all-time leading scorer with decent pieces to help him contend. Furthermore, the L.A. The company is focusing on having more salary space in the hopes of signing another star in 2027.

According to reports, the Lakers are prioritizing two-year deals to accommodate James’ wishes to contend while leaving enough room to sign a star in the future.

Both James and the Lakers understand what they want and are working to gauge their partnership.

“Right now, LeBron James understands the Lakers are prioritizing the future, in a lot of ways that really centers around Luka Doncic. He knows they’re going to go younger at different points. They are really prioritizing two-year contracts right now,” Charania said. “They want to have max salary space in 2027.

“For his part, at this point in his career, at his age 40 years old going on 41, he wants to compete for a championship. Wherever that may be, in Los Angeles or there are conversations to be had at another point.

There aren’t any rumors about the Los Angeles Lakers wanting to trade James. But with the team shifting focus, Charania said the four-time MVP is evaluating his situation with the organization.

“LeBron James is very closely eveluating, essentially how this goes with the Lakers and where he would want his career to be as he winds down… What we’re seeing right now is essentially a moment of truth between LeBron James and the Lakers.”

The Los Angeles Lakers are still looking for a center

This summer, many believe that the Los Angeles Lakers are looking to sign a center to pair with Doncic. One of their targets was Brook Lopez. However, the Los Angeles Clippers were able to pursue him first, and both parties reached an agreement on Monday. The other center linked to the Lakers is veteran big man Al Horford. One of the biggest downsides, however, is Horford’s age.

Looking at other options, the Los Angeles Lakers could try to pursue Deandre Ayton. The Portland Trail Blazers recently bought out Ayton’s contract and will be a free agent on Wednesday. He’s a better fit because of his age and athleticism as a rim-running big man in pick-and-roll situations.
