Adam Silver addresses Giannis Antetokounmpo injury controversy as Bucks face league pressure

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s injury situation has drawn attention from the league office, with NBA commissioner Adam Silver addressing the Milwaukee Bucks star’s limited availability.

Silver’s remarks followed a statement from the National Basketball Players Association, which spoke on behalf of Giannis Antetokounmpo and urged the league to uphold its player participation policy, emphasizing that star players should be allowed to play when they are healthy enough to do so.

“Prior to that press release from the players association, we were not aware there was an issue,” commented the NBA commissioner. “We knew Giannis was injured. He was within the sort of usual period it was taking to come back from that injury. So I was a bit surprised by that press release.”

“Yes, when our players association announces they see an issue, of course we’ll look into it. So that’s where it currently stands.”

The Bucks handling of Giannis Antetokounmpo’s injury

Antetokounmpo sustained a left knee hyperextension along with a bone bruise after an awkward landing on a dunk attempt against the Indiana Pacers on March 15. He expressed a desire to get back on the court, but the Milwaukee Bucks’ training staff decided to keep him out of action.

The Greek Freak later underwent an MRI, and Doc Rivers said the results showed no structural damage. Even so, Antetokounmpo has remained sidelined. Ahead of Milwaukee’s March 21 game in Phoenix, he went through an extended pregame workout that featured multiple dunks, something he does not typically include in his routine.

Part of the National Basketball Players Association’s statement suggested that the Milwaukee Bucks may be engaging in “tanking,” or managing situations in a way that could lead to more losses in order to improve their draft position.

The Bucks now face increased scrutiny from the league office as Silver investigates whether the team is deliberately holding out a healthy superstar to improve draft positioning. With Antetokounmpo visibly healthy enough to dunk in pregame workouts yet remaining sidelined, Milwaukee must provide convincing medical justification or risk penalties for violating player participation policies. The controversy has put the franchise in an awkward position, balancing tank incentives against league integrity standards.
