Al Horford Reveals His Decision to Leave Boston Celtics was 'Deeper Than Basketball'

When the Golden State Warriors hosted the Boston Celtics at Chase Center on Thursday night, the spotlight naturally shifted to Al Horford.

For the first time since leaving Boston in free agency, Horford faced the franchise he helped guide to an NBA title in 2024.

Before tipoff, Horford addressed reporters and offered a revealing, if cryptic, explanation for his departure.

“For me, the decision, it’s something that’s deeper than just the basketball stuff. And it’s something that at some point I’ll share with people,” Horford said. “But for me, it felt like it was time for me to go elsewhere.”

Horford’s exit last summer surprised many in Boston. Team president Brad Stevens had publicly expressed interest in retaining the veteran big man, yet a new deal never materialized.

However, the veteran eventually signed a reported two-year contract worth more than $11 million with Golden State, choosing a new chapter in the Bay Area after four productive seasons in his Celtics reunion stint.

Despite the competitive tension, he admitted the matchup carried personal significance. He spoke warmly about reconnecting with former teammates and coaches, calling them “very special” and noting how much his family, particularly his son, looked forward to the reunion.

Although Boston handled business comfortably, Horford’s presence served as a reminder of the intangibles he brought to the organization.

He acknowledged no surprise after Boston’s success without him , pointing to coach Joe Mazzulla’s system and the growth of younger players stepping into larger roles. That culture, Horford suggested, has been there during last year’s championship run.

Still, his departure leaves lingering questions about legacy. Asked whether he would consider retiring as a Celtic, Horford left the door open.

“It would definitely be a privilege,” he said. “But right now I’m just focused on finishing out this year.”

For now, the next chapter continues in Golden State, even if parts of his story remain untold.
