Al Horford’s Warriors role is proving underwhelming as his numbers noticeably drop

Golden State may end up regretting their decision to bring Al Horford into the squad this summer.

This past offseason, Horford left the Boston Celtics after spending a total of seven seasons with the team over two different stints.

After waiting for a few weeks, he signed with the Golden State Warriors on a two-year contract worth $12 million.

He was brought in to fill the starting center role, but early signs suggest he has declined more quickly than the club anticipated.

Golden State brought in Horford to help replace Kevon Looney, who joined the New Orleans Pelicans after leaving in free agency.

But at 39, Horford is already showing signs that he might not be up to the job. Steve Kerr has not started him in any of his first 11 games with the team, which tells its own story.

The bigger issue is just how much his numbers have dropped off compared to what he was doing last season with Boston.

Horford’s production has dipped across nearly every category. He is shooting just 33.8% from the field and only 31.9% from three-point range this year.

Compare that to his final season with the Celtics, where he hit 42.3% overall and shot 36.3% from beyond the arc for an NBA title-winning team. It is simply terrifying.

What could be next for Al Horford and the Golden State Warriors

One positive note is that Horford’s form has picked up a bit since he first joined the Warriors.

His shooting percentages, while still below par, have climbed from where they were just a fortnight ago.

Kerr seems willing to give him time, but that patience will not last forever. At some point soon, Horford will need to show more than just incremental gains.

His struggles are far from the only reason for Golden State’s middling 9-8 start in a tough Western Conference, but it has not helped their case either.
