SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs are rising again after years of irrelevance. They sit second in the top-heavy Western Conference with a 33–16 record. Everything looks rosy in San Antonio. The Spurs’ strong first half has earned a berth at the All-Star Game for Victor Wembanyama and coach Mitch Johnson.
Johnson, the Western Conference Head Coach of the Month for December, will coach one of the three All-Star teams. Mark Daigneault, coach of the West-leading Thunder, was not eligible. He coached in the 2025 All-Star Game. Johnson led the Spurs to a 32–45 record last season. He took over for an ailing Gregg Popovich. On Sunday, he said he looks forward to the All-Star experience.
“It would be an honor and humbling to be able to be a part of All-Star Weekend with the best players in this league,” Johnson said. “The league always does a great job of putting a great weekend on. It’s an example of and a reflection of the work that these guys have put in.”
San Antonio’s 33–16 record marks its best start through 49 games since the 2016–17 season. Wembanyama praised Johnson effusively.
“I’m so happy for him,” said Wembanyama. He finished Sunday with 25 points, eight rebounds, five blocks, and four steals. “I don’t know how many coaches have done this in their first season or first-and-a-half.”
Wembanyama will appear in his second career All-Star Game. He averages 24 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and one steal in 29 minutes. He leads the league in defensive rebounds and blocks per game.
Wembanyama earned his first All-Star start. He also earned his second career selection. He finished ahead of Anthony Edwards in fan voting. Fan votes count for 50 percent. Players and select media each make up 25 percent.
On Friday evening, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, and David Jones Garcia will participate in the 2026 Castrol Rising Stars event. It features a four-team round-robin tournament. Former NBA greats will coach the teams. On Saturday, Carter Bryant will compete in the dunk contest.
A notable snub is De’Aaron Fox. This season, Fox averages 19.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 6.1 assists. He shoots 48 percent from the field and 36 percent from three. Fox did not appear on the fan returns. He has proven himself a dependable Robin to Wembanyama’s Batman.
