Philadelphia 76ers All-Star Guard Tyrese Maxey has earned himself a brand new 5-year, $204 million contract from the Sixers. The 21st selection out of Kentucky in the 2020 draft, Tyrese Maxey has been a cheetah on the court in an NBA-sized zoo full of fast athletes.
The 23-year-old guard is now signed through the 2028-29 season mitigating the risk of Philadelphia losing one of its best draft selections in recent memory. Philadelphia’s General Manager Daryl Morey has now signed the new trio of Paul George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey through the 2025-26 season at a minimum. Embiid will have a $59M player option in the 2026-27 offseason at 32-years-old.
Just a few days ago, restricted free agent Tyrese Maxey was joking with former Wildcats teammate, Immanuel Quickley, about buying him a Chick-fil-A after Quickley signed a $175M contract extension to stay in Toronto.
Following the weekend, Maxey and Quickley can now play rock-paper-scissors to determine who is picking up that “finger-licking good food” bill as the younger guard decides to stay put alongside Paul George and Joel Embiid in Philly for the foreseeable future.
The new $200+ million contract was the highest amount the Philadelphia 76ers were allowed to pay Tyrese Maxey this offseason. According to Forbes, the Sixers caught a break with Tyrese Maxey being left OFF of the All-NBA team for 2024. The non-selection saved Philadelphia approximately $7 million in value as Maxey’s starting salary is capped at $35.3M or 25% of the 76ers salary cap. If he had made the All-NBA team, Maxey’s starting salary would be north of $40M for the upcoming year.
At 23 years old, Tyrese Maxey is still developing his game at the NBA level. Having watched almost every Sixers game over the past three seasons, the skills jump that Maxey made with the presence of James Harden was nothing short of remarkable.
Maxey was already a step faster than almost any guard in the league. Harden taught Maxey, as well as the rest of the Sixers squad, his patented step-back three ball which revolutionized Maxey’s game. Instead of just worrying about Tyrese’s blazing speed driving toward the hoop, NBA defenses also needed to worry about the 37.3% 3-point percentage now in his toolkit.
Tyrese Maxey has improved year-over-year for the Philadelphia 76ers. Between 2021 and 2024, Maxey has increased his points-per-game totals from 17.5 ppg to 25.9 ppg after the 2024 regular season. The young point guard increased his production in the postseason from 20.5 points per game to just shy of 30 points per game in the first-round loss to the New York Knicks in 2024.
