Houston Rockets’ young star Alperen Sengun has revealed what separates his veteran point guard Fred VanVleet from others in the league.
The 23-year-old is one of the best young players in the league, and last season averaged 19.1 points and 10.3 rebounds.
Labeled as ‘Baby Jokic,’ Alperen Sengun is set to enter his third NBA season and will now share the locker room with Kevin Durant.
However, he has already had great leadership in the form of Fred VanVleet, who he believes sees potential in him.
VanVleet has been a leader on the Rockets team ever since he joined them in 2023.
Although his first year with the team did not result in them reaching the playoffs, VanVleet did a wonderful job in the 2024-25 season to help the Rockets finish second in the Western Conference.
He is only 31 but has championship experience, which is why the Rockets re-signed him on a two-year $25 million extension.
Aside from putting on good performances himself, VanVleet also brings his teammates into the action, which is something that Sengun appreciates.
He said: “Fred has been an incredible leader since he first joined the team. He does a lot you don’t see on the court. Controlling and leading the team is not easy.
“He also does this when he’s not playing. In my opinion, there is not a single point guard like Fred in the league. Nowadays, point guards are focused on getting their shots. Fred is not like that.”
Sengun revealed that the one-time All-Star is always critical of him, but things do not tend to carry on for too long between the two.
“He sees the potential in me. Fred [and Ime Udoka] get mad and argue with me from time to time, but it doesn’t last long. He’s always in my ear,” Sengun added.
The Turkish player’s claims seem to be true as VanVleet recently even stated that Sengun could take a big leap next season.
The Rockets are all set to be the team to watch after bringing in Durant in a historic trade, involving seven teams.
They also made moves for players like Dorian Finney-Smith and Clint Capela in free agency, which further strengthens their roster.

But even with all these changes, VanVleet is expected to be a vital cog on the Rockets due to his abilities as a point guard.
He is a great playmaker and can facilitate offense for the array of talent the Rockets possess.
Season | Points | Assists |
2024-25 | 14.1 | 5.6 |
2023-24 | 17.4 | 8.1 |
2022-23 | 19.3 | 7.2 |
Durant is certainly one of the best scorers in the league, but he has always played well alongside a quality point guard.
VanVleet has also displayed his scoring prowess in the past and can shoot threes, which will give the Rockets another scoring option.
They will be relying on their newcomers heavily, but with a veteran like VanVleet also on the roster, the Rockets will back themselves to contend.
