Alperen Sengun did not have much playoff experience going into last season, but his first taste of the postseason was memorable.
After finishing the Western Conference in the second place, the Houston Rockets had to face the Golden State Warriors during the first playoff round.
The series was decided in a game seven, when the San Francisco team moved to the next round.
Months after those games, Sengun looked back to what he sees as the worst matchup possible for the Rockets.
According to the Turkish big man, no opponent was less welcome than Golden State.
That was not just down to the Warriors’ experience. Sengun felt they had an edge when it came to how games were officiated, saying Houston had a tougher time with calls throughout the series.
“The Warriors were probably the one team that would have given us the most trouble, and we drew them. They’re a very experienced team, and they fouled a lot. In the playoffs, they don’t call it. But they were the ones crying all series about fouls not being called.
“When it comes to us, we’re not really allowed to complain. It’s more of an internal thing. Ime Udoka doesn’t allow it. He loses his mind if we complain.”
Sengun’s shooting numbers dipped slightly during that series, dropping from 49.6% in the regular season to 45% against Golden State.
Much of that had to do with his defensive assignment against Draymond Green, but Sengun did not seem bothered by the challenge.
He even managed a highlight moment by throwing down a dunk over Green during the series.
“Never in my life has something like this scared me. If anything, it makes me angry,” Sengun said.
The Turkish centre may face the Warriors again in next season’s playoffs. However, the dynamics could shift significantly with Kevin Durant now alongside him in Houston.
Durant, a proven elite scorer, brings an important knowledge of Golden State’s system from his previous time with the team.
