76ers choosing to remain optimistic over Joel Embiid's injury

Embiid's injury has likely cost him an opportunity to win back-to-back MVP Awards. He was having an amazing season before suffering his latest setback. In 34 games, he's averaging 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists, shooting 53.3% from the field and 36.6% from three-point range.

The Sixers' decision to remain optimistic makes sense. With Embiid on the court, they have looked like potential championship contenders this season. Without him, they're likely a second-round exit at best. Their offense is designed around maximizing Embiid's offensive gravity and funneling opponents into his path on defense. 

Nevertheless, the Sixers' chances of success this season have taken a drastic hit. Even if Embiid does get cleared to play, he won't be at the level we saw earlier in the season. He will likely be on a minutes restriction. His mobility could be hindered, too, given the speed at which he would need to recover. You can't expect him to lead the team to a championship while playing at 50 or 60 percent of his usual level. 

Instead, Philadelphia may need to face the fact that Embiid is better off being allowed to recover over a longer timeframe. Having him back at full health next season is better than risking him in the playoffs when games are more physical. 

Of course, any decision regarding Embiid's availability will be down to the team's medical staff and Embiid himself. It's unlikely they would risk their best player if his body couldn't handle the workload and stress. Nevertheless, the NBA is better when Embiid is on the floor. He's among the brightest talents in the league. Fans around the world will be hoping they can see him return and strut his stuff in the playoffs. None more so than those donning Sixers blue and white.
