Insider issues warning to NBA about Luka Doncic, Mavericks

The Mavericks evened up their series against the Clippers on Tuesday. Luka Doncic led the way with a 32-point, nine-assist and six-rebound performance. He shot 42.3% from the field and 35.7% from three-point range. Yet, it was Doncic's defense that impressed the most.

Doncic's defensive ability has been questioned throughout his tenure in the NBA. He's been seen as an otherworldly talent on the offensive end but a turnstile on defense. That wasn't the case on Tuesday, as he ended the game with a defensive field goal percentage of 25%, meaning his opponents shot 1-of-4 when being guarded by the MVP candidate.

When speaking on Wednesday's edition of ESPN's "Get Up," insider Brian Windhorst warned the rest of the league about the Mavericks' ability to contend for a championship.

"This was probably the best defensive game he’s played his career," Windhorst said. "...This guy has been a defensive hole most of his career. He’s getting it done on both ends. Plus the Clippers were throwing double teams at him. He just handled it. He knows where to go with the ball. He’s got teammates who can stretch the floor... This is a warning sign to the rest of the league that he is developing like this."

Doncic and Kyrie Irving are a premier backcourt pairing and two of the best scorers in the NBA, and the Mavs have a deep and reliable rotation. If Doncic commits to playing on both sides of the court, he will elevate the Mavericks to a new level. His offensive talent ensures they're part of the championship conversation; adding defense would situate the franchise among the favorites.

Head coach Jason Kidd has likely been waiting for this development. Doncic is among the best players in the world, but if he can become a consistent defensive threat, Dallas' championship chances get much stronger.
