JJ Redick announces retirement from NBA after 15 seasons: 'I know it's time'

JJ Redick is hanging up the sneakers after 15 NBA seasons.

The veteran guard announced his retirement while hosting a new episode of his podcast, "The Old Man & The Three," that aired Tuesday.

In his announcement, Redick said he wanted last season to be his last year, and it was difficult to be away from his family, deal with injuries and COVID-19 protocols.

"I have some clarity now," Redick said. "And I know it's time. It's time for me to be a dad. It's time for me to reflect, to pause, and it's time for me to get ready for the next phase of my life."

Redick also shared some photos on Instagram featuring himself as a young basketball player and his two sons with him on the court.

The 37-year-old was a free agent this offseason after spending the 2020-21 campaign with the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks. He finishes with career averages of 12.8 points, two rebounds, two assists, a 44.7 field-goal percentage and 41.5 three-point percentage.

Redick became a star at Duke in the early 2000s and was drafted 11th overall by the Magic in 2006. In addition to the Magic, Pelicans and Mavericks, he has also played for the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers.

Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer reported last month that Redick preferred to play for either the New York Knicks or Brooklyn Nets this coming season because he had a desire to play closer to his family.

Fischer added that multiple NBA executives speculated Redick would consider retiring if he didn't land with the Knicks or Nets. It's unclear if either team showed interest in him this summer or if that potential lack of interest played into his decision to retire.
