Analyst: Victor Wembanyama's skills ahead of LeBron James' at same age

ESPN's Brian Windhorst said he thinks Victor Wembanyama's skill set is more advanced that that of LeBron James when he was the 19-year-old phenom coming into the NBA.

On the "First Take" panel, the longtime NBA insider explained how the French native benefited from spending his teenage years developing his impressive game against professionals. Windhorst also added that Wembanyama already has done something as a teenager that James didn't try until he was established in the league.

Few people have followed James' career as closely as Windhorst, who has trailed the future Hall of Famer since his high school days at St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio. (Windhorst went to the same high school a few years before James.) Monitoring LeBron from the start of his meteoric rise provides the veteran reporter insight on a young generational talent that not many others have on similar prodigies.

While the skill set quote may open your eyes wider than the emoji in the tweet, Windhorst's perspective on how both athletes approach training is far more illuminating.

Over the decades, training, nutrition and injury management for basketball players have all gone through constant evolution. What was only available for elite athletes of yesteryear could now be considered basic or immediate level for the modern-day stars, and even James himself has tools that legends of the past could only dream of.

That James started hosting a trainer at his home by his third NBA season may have certainly impressed his older peers, who may have only done such a thing has they entered the twilights of their careers. For Wembanyama to have done so even earlier only speaks to how much sports training has evolved, even within the last two decades.

Wemby's dazzling skills have led to Thursday night's long-awaited moment when his name will be called as the expected first-overall pick in the draft. Yet he already understands that taking care of his body is why he can retain his slim frame while trying to dominate the league for years to come.
