Matt Devlin went a little bit out of pocket during Friday’s preseason game.
The longtime Toronto Raptors play-by-play announcer Devlin went viral over his wild line about Raptors swingman Gradey Dick. In the first quarter against the Boston Celtics at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ont., Dick got out in transition and scored a nice contested basket at the rim.
In response to the great play, Devlin produced a wild line on the television broadcast for Sportsnet.
“Silky, smooth Gradey Dick!” exclaimed Devlin.
Here is the video.

It was definitely the “Gradey” that was doing the heavy lifting there for Devlin, who has been the TV play-by-play man for the Raptors since 2008 and has become an iconic voice in the Toronto area. Without that key word, the call would have gone a very (very) different way.
The 21-year-old Dick, a lottery pick by the Raptors in 2023, averaged 14.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game last season. That was a noticeable improvement over Dick’s rookie year, during which he averaged 8.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game.
As for Dick’s … interesting last name, he has certainly embraced it, especially ever since making the leap to the NBA. Most infamously during a game last year, the former University of Kansas star Dick did an unbelievable jersey swap with a particular opposing player.
