Another playoff flop further complicates James Harden's legacy

James Harden and the Cleveland Cavaliers were swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Harden, who was acquired midseason to pair alongside All-NBA guard Donovan Mitchell, was expected to help Cleveland finally break through as a legitimate championship contender. Instead, Harden's long-documented postseason struggles resurfaced. At this stage of his career, what exactly is Harden's legacy?

James Harden's playoff woes

There is no doubt that Harden was the premier shooting guard in the 2010s. The 2018 MVP became known for his elite ball-handling, perimeter shooting and high-level playmaking. It is fair to say that Harden is one of the most prolific regular-season players in the association's history. However, when April and May arrive, the story has often changed dramatically.

The 2009 first-round pick has had a bevy of underwhelming playoff performances throughout his career. During the 2015 postseason with the Houston Rockets, Harden committed 12 turnovers in an elimination game against the Golden State Warriors. In the 2017 playoffs, Harden contributed only 10 points on eleven shot attempts in an elimination game against the San Antonio Spurs.

The struggles did not stop there. In the 2023 playoffs with the Philadelphia 76ers, Harden and Philadelphia had a 3-2 series lead against the Boston Celtics before collapsing. In Games 6 and 7, Harden averaged just 11 points while shooting 26.1 percent from the field. Then, in the 2025 postseason as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers, Harden scored only seven points in a first-round Game 7 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

The 36-year-old's playoff struggles were on display once again during this year's Eastern Conference Finals. In Game 1, the Cavaliers had a 22-point lead midway through the fourth quarter before ultimately losing in overtime. The Cavaliers never appeared to recover from the devastating loss.

Harden was a liability on both ends of the floor throughout the series, particularly on defense, and it was evident during the Game 1 collapse.

Jalen Brunson relentlessly targeted Harden by forcing switches.

Harden produced his worst statistical series performance since leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2012. In the Eastern Conference Finals, Harden shot 38.9 percent from the field, 17.9 percent from three-point range and averaged 16 points. The 11-time All-Star also averaged 4.3 turnovers in the series.

Cleveland traded two-time All-Star Darius Garland in favor of the veteran Harden. While Garland has missed ample time due to injury, was it wise for the organization to move a 26-year-old rising star for a player with a shady postseason track record?

It is appropriate to mention that Harden is now tied with Karl Malone with the most playoff wins without a championship (98) in NBA history.

What is James Harden's legacy?

Despite the playoff disappointments, Harden is a surefire future Hall of Famer and arguably a top-five shooting guard in NBA history.

"The Beard" has earned eight All-NBA selections, including one as recently as 2025. Harden has accumulated multiple assists and scoring titles throughout his legendary career and is often credited with popularizing the step-back three-pointer.

The primary factor preventing Harden from being ranked even higher among the all-time greats is not necessarily the absence of a championship, but rather his inability to consistently perform at the same elite level in the postseason that he established during the regular season.

Even though Harden was unable to change the postseason narrative despite helping Cleveland reach the conference finals, his longevity and durability should still add significant credence to his legacy.
