Anthony Davis injury raises bigger questions for Mavericks after Luka trade gamble

The Dallas Mavericks season has continued to deteriorate.

Although Anthony Davis was listed as probable for the Mavs’ latest game against the Indiana Pacers, dealing with what was described as bilateral Achilles tendinopathy, he still managed to suit up and start.

During the second quarter, Davis could be seen reaching for his left leg after a defensive play. He sat down near the baseline, appeared to be in discomfort and kept holding his left heel. He then left for the locker room and did not return for the remainder of the contest.

Anthony Davis’ injury raises more doubt over Luka Doncic trade

Nico Harrison made headlines in February when he sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Davis.

The move raised eyebrows across the league, with Harrison betting big on defence. So far, though, it hasn’t paid off.

Dallas have stumbled out of the gates this season, and if Davis ends up missing significant time, they could be facing a lost campaign.

On the other side of the trade, Doncic looked strong for LA before picking up a couple of injuries. He was averaging 46 points, 11.5 rebounds and 8.5 assists through two games before being sidelined with a left finger sprain and lower left contusion.

Cooper Flagg’s arrival hasn’t changed Dallas’ fortunes

After winning the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery and landing Cooper Flagg, the Mavericks were hoping to have found a new cornerstone for their future.

Flagg, long hyped as a generational talent, was quickly seen by fans as the next face of the franchise, expected to step into Luka Doncic’s old role without missing a beat.

But early returns have been mixed. Flagg had a tough outing against the Oklahoma City Thunder, finishing with just two points and no assists.

Part of that might be down to how he’s being used. With Kyrie Irving out, Flagg has been asked to play point guard – not his natural position.

Just over a year ago, Doncic had taken Dallas to the NBA Finals. Now, in late 2025, the team looks completely unrecognisable from that run.
