Anthony Davis Praises Lakers' Rookie Dalton Knecht and Offers Useful Criticism

The Lakers are making critics eat their words under first-year head coach JJ Redick. After many predicted they'd miss the playoffs, Los Angeles sits at 9-4 to start the 2024-25 season, with Anthony Davis and rookie sensation Dalton Knecht leading the charge.

Davis has dominated on both ends of the floor during the Lakers' hot start, but it's Knecht who's beginning to turn heads. While the rookie has shown flashes of brilliance, Davis believes there's one simple thing holding him back - he needs to shoot more.

Through 13 games, Knecht's numbers tell an interesting story. He's averaging 9.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 20.2 minutes per game. His per-36 minute stats are even more impressive: 16.6 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.1 three-pointers. Most notably, he's shooting a blistering .484/.404/1.000 slash line.

After some early-season hesitation, Knecht is finally showing why the Lakers drafted him. His last three games have been nothing short of spectacular. It started with a 19-point explosion against Memphis, where he shot 7-of-8 from the field and perfect 5-of-5 from three. He followed that up with 14 points against San Antonio - his first stretch of consecutive double-digit scoring games.

But it was his performance against New Orleans that really opened eyes. Knecht erupted for 27 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the Lakers' 104-99 victory. It seems he's taking Davis's advice about shooting more to heart.

"When he shoots the ball I think it's going in," Davis said. "That's why we get so frustrated and upset when he doesn't shoot."

For a rookie, there's no better criticism than your teammates wanting you to shoot more. If Knecht continues to build on this confidence, the Lakers might have found another key piece for their championship pursuit.
