Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis reportedly underwent surgery for a detached retina. Davis, 32, averaged 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, shooting 51.6% from the field during the 2024-25 NBA season. The 32-year-old is expected to be ready to start the 2025-26 NBA season.
ESPN’s Shams Charania posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday. Charania, 31, wrote, “Dallas Mavericks All-Star Anthony Davis underwent a procedure to repair a detached retina that he suffered during the season, sources tell ESPN. Davis played through multiple hits to the face last year. He is expected to be healthy for the next training camp.”Charania’s post garnered a wide variety of opinions. One user wrote, “Need him healthy, defensively grifted,” while another user responded, “Mavs fans getting Anthony Davis injury alerts even during the offseason.”
Davis isn’t the only NBA player to undergo surgery for a detached retina. However, the news of Davis’ injury is unsettling to Dallas Mavericks fans. Injury analyst Jeff Stotts wrote on X, “Multiple NBA players have suffered retina injuries, including Dirk Nowitzki, who bruised his right retina in 2006. Players who have endured retina tears or detached retinas include Matt Barnes, DJ Mbenga, and, most famously, Amar’e Stoudemire. Fortunately, surgery has a high success rate.”
Anthony Davis would require recovery time and downtime, but he’s expected to be ready to start the 2025-26 NBA season, per NBC Sports. This upcoming season, a healthy Davis will join Cooper Flagg and Dereck Lively II in what could become one of the best front lines in the NBA.
