Anthony Davis Reveals He’ll Wear Protective Eyewear For The Rest Of His NBA Career

The 32-year-old big man sustained the injury last season after taking multiple hits to the face, some of which initially seemed minor. Over time, the cumulative effect resulted in a detached retina. Despite the seriousness of the condition, Davis continued to play through discomfort until surgery became unavoidable. 

The procedure took place on July 8, and while he has since been cleared for camp, the goggles are now mandatory equipment.

For Mavericks fans, the announcement comes with mixed emotions. On one hand, Davis’ toughness is undeniable, he played through a dangerous eye condition that could have sidelined him much earlier. 

On the other hand, it’s another reminder of his lengthy injury history, which has often overshadowed his incredible talent. Still, his willingness to adapt rather than miss more time is being viewed as a positive step for Dallas.

Davis’ numbers last season speak for themselves. Between his time with the Lakers and Mavericks, he averaged 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.2 blocks, and 1.2 steals across 51 regular-season games. 

When available, he remained one of the league’s best two-way players, capable of dominating both ends of the floor. But his availability was once again a question mark, frustrating both fanbases he suited up for in 2024–25.

Head coach Jason Kidd confirmed that Davis has been cleared for training camp along with the rest of the roster, except for Kyrie Irving, who is still recovering from a knee injury. 

The goggles may take some getting used to for fans, but for Davis, they represent longevity. Players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once turned eyewear into part of their identity, and Davis may now follow that same path. For the Mavericks, the hope is simple: if the goggles keep Davis on the court, they could be the most important accessory of the season.
