Anthony Davis says he's 'not some Greek god', 'or Giannis'

After a nightmare season with the Los Angeles Lakers, Anthony Davis said at media day that he's not going to worry about other people's expectations of him this season.

The Lakers would be thrilled if Davis played like Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they'd also be thrilled if he simply played more. For the past two seasons, The Brow has taken the court in less than half of the Lakers' games (76 out of a possible 154). Davis contends that he's not one to worry about criticism, and simply "work hard, defend, and do what the team needs to do to win."

In a way, Davis is like a Greek god, in that he's very powerful, and also flawed. Zeus wielded lightning bolts, but he was a womanizer. Poseidon controlled the sea, but he was moody.

Anthony Davis still put up 23 points and nearly 10 rebounds a game last season, but he couldn't stay healthy. Davis is like Hephaestus, the god of fire, who was thrown off Mount Olympus and got a lingering leg injury. Mount Olympus needed load management!

Davis thought the problem with last year's Lakers was, "We didn't have enough reps, enough time together." If the Lakers stay healthy, they could bounce back to the playoffs, especially if Davis avoid a repeat of his scariest injury from 2021: an Achilles strain.
