Anthony Davis snaps infamous streak as Lakers keep winning

After 10 previous losses to Domantas Sabonis, Anthony Davis finally snapped the infamous "Sabonis curse" by helping the Lakers defeat the Kings 131-127 in a thrilling game Saturday night.

With 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter, it was a one-possession game as the Lakers led 125-123. That was when Davis, rather fittingly, hit a three over the outstretched arms of Sabonis and proceeded to mean-mug the Kings center. He knew the curse had been lifted.

Following the win, Davis downplayed his head-to-head rivalry with Sabonis when asked about finally getting a win over the Kings star.

"It was a team effort," Davis said, via ESPN's Dave McMenamin. "But I don't get into all that. I don't care. I mean, he's a hell of a player, an All-Star. He just had a whole Netflix show about him [laughs]. He's one of the premier bigs in this league, so definitely hats off to him. He's always able to do it on the floor on both ends. We were just aggressive and got the team win tonight."

Despite the loss, Sabonis led the Kings with a triple-double, notching 29 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists. He also added a steal and a block.

Meanwhile, Davis, with his third consecutive 30-point outing, became the first Laker since Kobe Bryant to start the season in such red-hot form.

Davis finished with 31 points, nine rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocks while shooting an impressive 10-for-15 from the field. Through three games thus far, he's averaging a career-high 34 points to go with 11 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.7 steals. He's also shooting a career-high 57.1 percent from the floor.

If Davis can continue his dominant start to the season, the Lakers could defy expectations in their first season under new head coach JJ Redick. Before the start of the season, most analysts tipped the Lakers as a fringe playoff team, at best, protected to win around 40 to 45 games. Even the oddsmakers projected them to win 43.5 games. However, the Lakers realistically look like a title contender after the first week.

The Lakers travel to Phoenix for their first road game on Monday night.
