Anthony Davis Update Emerges After Mavericks' Nico Harrison Decision

The Dallas Mavericks are widely expected to announce the dismissal of GM Nico Harrison on Tuesday, as initially reported by Marc Stein before Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon confirmed the report. The ownership has finally ended Harrison's tenure after over four years on the job, and nine months after he traded franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first-round pick.

Mounting fan resentment and a 3-8 start to the season for the Mavericks sealed Harrison's dismissal less than a month into the 2025-26 NBA season. He was invested in watching Davis take the mantle of franchise superstar, but a combination of injuries and experimental lineups has limited his production.

Given Dallas' crowded frontcourt also features Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington and No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, Davis' presence and reluctance to play at center have made it challenging for coach Jason Kidd to succeed offensively.

With one of Davis' biggest supporters in Harrison gone from the franchise, Marc Stein has revealed what might be next for the 32-year-old forward/center going forward.

"As for what Nico Harrison's dismissal means for Anthony Davis' future in Dallas: Sources tell The Stein Line and DLLS Sports that Davis' agent Rich Paul has established a strong relationship with Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont since February's trade. They are in regular contact."

Having a relationship with members of the ownership group, like Governor Patrick Dumont, could help protect Davis from any hasty short-term trades to help the franchise move on from the Doncic debacle. Even if Harrison was the mastermind behind the trade, Dumont and the ownership signed off on it, so it's in their interests to see Davis succeed in Dallas.

Davis has averaged 20.8 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.2 blocks in 29.8 minutes per game in five games this season. He's missed time with a calf injury and has yet to play a game in November.

The Mavericks will play their first game after Harrison's firing on Friday against the Los Angeles Clippers at 8:30 p.m. EST.
