The Timberwolves and Nuggets are set to meet once again in the NBA playoffs. The Nuggets and Timberwolves are 1-1 against each other in playoff series since Denver won the NBA championship in 2023. Now the stakes are even higher for both teams in an unpredictable Western Conference, where there hasn’t been a repeat champion since the Kevin Durant and Steph Curry-led Golden State Warriors in the 2017-2018 season.

The matchups between the Timberwolves and the Nuggets have drawn the attention of the league at large. Many have discussed it as one of the preeminent rivalries in the NBA. In a quote obtained by NBA reporter Dane Moore, Anthony Edwards agrees that the matchup between the two Western Conference contenders has certainly grown into a rivalry.

“I don’t think there’s anything else to call it but a rivalry… I think there’s a lot of rivalries in the league now. And I think me and Denver is one of them,” he said.

The Nuggets and Timberwolves have engaged in several high-octane regular-season games, including Denver’s Christmas Day overtime victory over Minnesota that led to Anthony Edwards being ejected after arguing with the referees. But rivalries are said to be forged in the playoffs, and both teams have a hefty playoff resume against each other. In 2023, en route to their NBA Championship, the Nuggets were able to easily dispatch of the Timberwolves in 5 games in the opening round.

But the Timberwolves enacted revenge over the Nuggets the following playoffs in 2024, where they beat the Nuggets in 7 games in the conference semi-finals, including a historic 20-point comeback in Game 7. Now, both teams are at an interesting point in their rivalry. Throughout this season, both teams were hit with injuries, including significant time lost for Anthony Edwards and Nikola Jokic. Now both teams must clash against each other in the hopes of making a run to the NBA Finals.

The Nuggets and the Timberwolves kick off their playoff series on Saturday, April 18, at 3:30 PM. The game will be aired on Prime Video.
