Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards is the 2026 NBA All-Star Game MVP after leading the USA Stars over the USA Stripes in the championship game on Sunday.

The NBA used a USA vs. World format for this year's All-Star Game in a bid to increase the competitiveness of the event. Two U.S. squads and one World team competed in a single-day tournament with a round-robin system and the top two teams facing each other in the championship.

Sure enough, it worked, with three of the four total games played decided by three points or fewer.

Only the championship game ended in a blowout, with Edwards' USA Stars dominating the USA Stripes featuring LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard47-21. However, that might have had something to do with the USA Stripes, populated by veteran All-Stars, being worn out, with the title game being its third straight contest.

Regardless, Edwards brought out his competitiveness, starting with the first game against Team World. The Timberwolves guard recorded 13 points and two rebounds in the contest, a 37-35 victory for the Stars.

In his team's second game, this time against the USA Stripes, Edwards had 11 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 42-40 defeat.

In the championship game, no one from the USA Stars scored in double digits, but Edwards remained impressive with eight points, four rebounds and two assists. In total, he accumulated 32 points, nine rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes of play.

Edwards also shot 13-of-22 throughout the tournament, including 6-of-15 from deep. He received 10 of 14 MVP votes, earning him the Kobe Bryant Trophy as the All-Star Game MVP.

Following the festivities, Edwards admitted that winning the All-Star MVP award was an "unexpected" outcome and shared his appreciation for those who voted for him. He then expressed his hope of winning three more and matching Bryant's record.

"Hopefully I can get three more trophies like Kobe Bryant," Edwards shared.

Bryant holds the record for the most All-Star Game MVPs, tied with Bob Pettit with four. The trophy for the award was named after the Los Angeles Lakers legend back in 2020 following his death in a helicopter crash.

The Lakers icon was an 18-time All-Star, which is the third-most selections in NBA history, only behind LeBron James (22) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (19).

Edwards certainly has a lot of work to do to get to four All-Star Game MVP awards, but he has taken the first step.

The Timberwolves guard's aspirations also mean that he's going to take the competition seriously in the years to come. That is a good thing for the NBA All-Star Game, which has been criticized in recent years for its lack of competitiveness.
