Anthony Edwards once again didn’t finish the game on the bench, walking off during another disappointing loss for the Timberwolves.
Tensions surfaced in Minnesota’s New Year’s Eve defeat to the Atlanta Hawks when Anthony Edwards left the bench area before the final buzzer for the second time in a week. The incident occurred during a late timeout with 7:52 remaining as the Timberwolves trailed 109–80, raising concerns about leadership and accountability inside the locker room.
Despite the lopsided loss, Edwards was Minnesota’s top scorer, finishing with 30 points on 10-of-18 shooting in 33 minutes, including three made three-pointers. While his on-court production remains elite, his visible frustration has become a growing storyline as the Timberwolves navigate a demanding season.
Following the game, Edwards did not speak with reporters, but head coach Chris Finch addressed the situation directly. Finch acknowledged his star’s emotions while emphasizing the importance of professionalism and unity on the bench.
“Obviously frustrated with the performance — and understandably so — but he needs to stay out there and support his teammates,” Finch told reporters, making it clear that leaving the bench area is not acceptable regardless of the circumstances.
At 21–13, Minnesota currently sits sixth in the Western Conference, yet their inconsistency has exposed a key weakness: the lack of a true point guard capable of easing the playmaking burden on Edwards. The front office is widely expected to explore options as the trade deadline approaches.
Potential targets linked to the Timberwolves include Coby White, Trae Young, Collin Sexton and Dennis Schröder. Whether Minnesota makes a move or holds steady, the organization understands that pairing Edwards with a reliable floor general could be the difference between another deep playoff run and a frustrating postseason exit.
