Anthony Gill is the Vet the Wizards Need

The Washington Wizards recently re-signed 5-year vet Anthony Gill to a one-year deal. Gill was waived just over a month ago, but will return to a very young Wizards team in a leadership role.

Anthony Gill’s Impact

While bringing back Anthony Gill may be viewed as a questionable move by some, it makes sense. With so much roster turnover, just one other player, Corey Kispert, remains from the 2023 team; it makes sense to bring back a familiar face. Having stability on a roster is very important for young players, as it helps connect the front office and players.

The Wizards are also one of the youngest teams in the league. 11 Wizards have been drafted over the three seasons, and just four Wizards were born before 2001.

This is a team that desperately needs leadership, especially with their other vets in Khris Middleton , Corey Kispert, and CJ McCollum not being safe from trades this season. Gill’s value in leadership is more than enough to want him as a 15th man on a developing team.

What Happens to the Rest of the Team?

After signing Anthony Gill, Washington now has 16 of the maximum 15 guaranteed roster spots filled. One Wizards player will be waived or traded before opening night.

Jaylen Martin was recently waived, so GM Will Dawkins has an open two-way spot. The Go-Go recently traded for Alondes Williams, who could take that contract. A veteran could also be traded for salary filler and picks if they don’t decide to demote anyone.

Gill’s Future in Washington

Gill has scored just 318 points over the last two seasons and is in the back end of the rotation. He brings vital leadership and stability.

Gill has been huge in the development of the younger Wizards, and the franchise has shown commitment to him. The signing of Gill is more important than it may originally seem.
