Atlanta Hawks Forward Suffers Season-Ending ACL Tear
Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports

The Atlanta Hawks’ challenging 2023-24 NBA season took another hit as forward Saddiq Bey is sidelined for the remainder with an ACL tear in his left knee, deepening the injury crisis for the team.

Already without key players Trae Young and Jalen Johnson, plus backup center Onyeka Okongwu, the Hawks’ playoff aspirations are further jeopardized.

“We’ve just been dropping guys and dropping guys,” Hawks star Dejounte Murray said. “It’s tough. I think injuries is what it comes down to (as far as) dictating how your season goes for a lot of teams.”

Bey’s injury occurred during a 116-103 defeat against New Orleans, initially believed to be a hyperextended knee. However, further examination revealed the severity of the damage, leading to the decision for surgery.

The incident saw Bey in visible distress on the court, eventually making his way off with assistance. His contribution this season, averaging 13.7 points and 6.5 rebounds over 63 games, will be missed as the Hawks strive to maintain their position in the playoff race.

Having started his NBA journey with the Detroit Pistons, Bey joined the Hawks last season and has been a vital component of their lineup.

The loss of Young and Johnson had already strained the team, and Okongwu’s absence due to a toe injury adds to the challenges facing the Hawks as they navigate the remainder of the season with a depleted roster.

“That’s been the thing for us all year,” Murray reflected. “We just been trying to get healthy and see what we can do with everybody healthy.”

Bey is set to enter free agency this offseason, which will surely be complicated due to his injury. Teams will need to evaluate his recovery timetable and determine how much they are willing to offer on a contract.
