Jaylen Brown's season began ignominiously when his Boston Celtics lost their first three games — and his hair dye rubbed off on OG Anunoby. On Tuesday, he decided to do something about his hairline.
On a Twitch stream Tuesday night, Brown had a barber shave his head, going from a fake full head of hair to an honest chrome dome. He will no longer smudge the jerseys of his opponents with whatever he was using to simulate a healthy hairline and perhaps play more freely.
LeBron James may have the NBA's most famous hairline. King James wore a headband for the first 12 years of his NBA career, perhaps to conceal his receding hairline. After passing Michael Jordan on the all-time playoff scoring list in 2017, James joked that, "I didn't go bald like Mike, but I'm getting there."
That may be why Brown called James and left a message during the stream. "Red alert, red alert! I've been caught slipping," he announced, before asking James if he should go to Turkey for a hair transplant.
Brown jokingly blamed his baldness on the "media, stress, championships" that went along with playing in Boston for nearly a decade.

Notably, James did not pick up his phone, which is what many of Brown's Celtics teammates declined to do when Brown called them during a September live stream.

He got shut out by Jordan Walsh, Neemias Queta, and more until Payton Pritchard saved the day:

Brown is averaging 26 PPG this season and shooting 50 percent from the field, but he only has one steal and one block through four games, after averaging over a steal a game each of the last six seasons. Perhaps that's because he was subconsciously trying not to get too close to players he was guarding, for fear of another smudged jersey.
Brown could also look to teammate Derrick White, who was covering a receding hairline until the summer of 2023, when he finally went with a shaved head.

What happened after that? White set career marks in points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks and three-point shooting (196 threes at 39.6 percent). He finished eighth in Defensive Player of the Year voting, and the Celtics won the NBA title, thanks to the freedom of playing without a headband or a combover.
Brown may have suffered embarrassment, but he attacked the problem good-naturedly. Playing without the injured Jayson Tatum and many members of the 2024 title team, the Celtics will face several issues this season. Their best player has shown he can address his own problems decisively.
