Bam Adebayo may not be a well-known household name to basketball fans that do not pay attention to the Miami Heat and its undying Heat Culture but there is not one Heat fan that would have guessed that Edrice Femi Adebayo would hold the record for the second-highest points ever scored by a NBA player in a game surpassing Kobe Bryant’s 81 point performance.
The North Carolina native was a breakout star during his lone season with the Kentucky Wildcats, as he was part of an exciting freshman group that featured San Antonio Spurs Guard De’Aaron Fox and Sacramento Guard Malik Monk, where Bam led the team in rebounds and blocks.
He did finish third in points behind his other Kentucky counterparts as a surprise to many as he also lead the team in field goal percentage. Going into his draft, he was heavily compared to Hall of Famer Dwight Howard because of his frame, athleticism, rebounding tenacity, and defensive presence.
However, Dwight Howard’s career high in a single game is 46 points, which came in a Game 1 playoff bout in 2011. This is not shocking, as Dwight Howard was the prime offensive weapon during this time period.
Bam Adebayo rarely has the offense run through him, as his career high before this 83-point outing was 41 points 5 years ago, and typically averages 20 points throughout his time with the Heat, where their culture surrounds the big guys banging the boards and playing lockdown defense. Instead, Bam decided to rewrite history and take the lead.
Bam not only passed NBA great Kobe Bryant he also claims the Heat franchise record for points in a game and passed the NBA leader in career points LeBron James who once held the record with his own personal career high of 61-points.
I am in no means comparing Bam’s career to both Kobe and LeBron, but seeing how both players are known for their offensive skillset, you must respect the fact that Bam posted this 83-point performance, no matter what context you want to take in order to discredit this historic performance.
NBA fans will look to discredit and diminish this performance, but we should aim to celebrate the performance that Bam put together on March 10th, 2026.
As I stated in my rant about showing respect to the All-Star weekend and its participants, I feel the NBA fans and former players have to eliminate the hate and let the players enjoy the game they love.
