It’s always hard to keep a straight face when Shaquille O’Neal is on a tear. During his recent appearance on the Straight Game Podcast, he really went for the hot burns. While chatting with hosts Mike Bibby and Eddie House, the Hall of Famer turned his attention to Las Vegas Aces assistant coach Ty Ellis and put into light something that sent everyone laughing.
“Why you look like if Charles Barkley overdosed on Ozempic,” Shaquille O’Neal said, after asking Ellis to stand up. Ellis looked like he’s seen heavier days, but the big man certainly made light of his situation. *wink* *wink*
And another layer to that rib was the Ozempic reference, a nod to the diabetes drug often associated with weight loss.
Shaquille O’Neal’s roast game is Shaq-sized, especially when it comes to Barkley. Of course, he wasn’t there at the moment. But Shaq’s sharp eyes already landed him a stand-in for his back-and-forth tandem, picking on Ellis in place of Barkley.
Ellis laughed off the moment, even revealing that Shaquille O’Neal had already hit him with the same line backstage. The coach was a good sport knowing that it was just a little lighthearted moment.
The Shaquille O’Neal brand of Shaq humor is TV and entertainment gold. It’s been a while since the former LA Lakers center played for real, but his presence in the world of media is still unassailable. Whether he’s on a podcast or behind the desk, Shaquille O’Neal knows how to keep the spotlight on him, even when the subject is someone else.
Shaquille O’Neal played in an era where it was hard to make a mark. That’s why it’s a big deal when it comes to talking about legacy. On the same episode of the Straight Game Podcast, he wasn’t happy with how often Kobe Bryant is left out of greatest-of-all-time conversations.
“I just get frustrated when people talk about the GOATs of the game and (Kobe Bryant’s) name is not mentioned,” Shaquille O’Neal said. “Like I don’t care who you pick whether it’s Michael (Jordan) or LeBron (James) or Kobe, but just mention all the names. That’s all, just mention all the names. It’s just like they surpassed him up and went from Mike to LeBron and they left him out. So I would like to hear all the recipients and then let the people pick.”
Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant. The names have become inseparable as the duo won three titles together in Los Angeles. Now they weren’t always perfect, both as individuals and as a duo, but Shaquille O’Neal knows that Shaq won’t be Shaq without Kobe. If anyone knows who deserves a GOAT spot, it’s the big man. And his answer would be Kobe Bryant.
