5:58: Simmons is confirmed to have torn his right Achilles and will undergo surgery, the Kings announced in a press release, per Marc Stein (Twitter link). His timetable was not disclosed, but he will almost certainly miss the entirety of the 2026/27 season.
5:43 Kings forward/guard Ben Simmons is believed to have suffered a torn Achilles in practice on Sunday, Shams Charania reports (via Twitter).
Prior to his comeback effort during this preseason, Simmons had been out of the league since the end of the 2024/25 season while trying to deal with a back injury that had hurt his mobility and effectiveness in previous years, as well as a loss of confidence stemming from his days with the Sixers.
In his two preseason contests with Sacramento, Simmons showed an aggressiveness unseen since the early days of his career and averaged 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in just 17.4 minutes per game.
If the concerns about the nature of the injury turn out to be true, it will almost certainly be a season-ending injury for the 30-year-old Simmons and a devastating end to this year’s attempt to regain his footing in the NBA.
The Kings will also be left searching for answers, as Simmons was expected to be in their starting lineup on opening day, alongside Darius Acuff, Zach LaVine, Keegan Murray, and Domantas Sabonis. The team has turned to Precious Achiuwa often during preseason, starting four of the five games he played in and averaging 10.6 points and 5.8 rebounds.
An Achilles tear to Simmons would also mark the third of the not-yet-started season around the NBA, as the Thunder’s Otega Oweh and the Sixers’ Ariel Hukporti both suffered Achilles tears earlier in preseason play.
