The Golden State Warriors are entering a defining phase. With Stephen Curry now 38, the franchise are focused on maximising their remaining championship window.
Recent moves and reported targets reflect that urgency. Golden State has consistently explored opportunities to add established elite talent rather than prioritising long-term development.
That approach nearly resulted in a major deal at the trade deadline. It also sets the stage for another aggressive push once the offseason begins.
San Francisco Standard journalist Tim Kawakami reported that the Warriors were close to landing Kawhi Leonard before the deadline, only for the Los Angeles Clippers to pull out late.
Kawakami later reinforced that position on X, stating: “Multiple NBA sources indicate that they were close a deal for Kawhi Leonard at the deadline before the Clippers pulled out – and that GSWs plan to be just as aggressive this offseason trying to line up one more run.”
The update clarifies Golden State’s intentions. Leonard, a two-time NBA champion for San Antonio Spurs and Toronto Raptors, remains a primary target.
Having already come close once, they appear prepared to push further to complete the move.
Leonard is not the only star under consideration. According to Marc Stein, a potential move for LeBron James is also on the cards for the Warriors.
The veteran forward remains highly productive, averaging over 20 points, alongside strong rebound and assist numbers. His experience aligns with Golden State’s short-term focus.
With multiple big names being assessed, the direction is clear: Steve Kerr’s side are expected to be major contenders for the 2026-27 NBA trophy.
