With the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James seemingly not on the same page, Bill Simmons pitched a massive trade.
It’s fair to say that LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers aren’t exactly thriving in the NBA right now, despite their strong record.
LeBron’s defensive effort improved for the Lakers in their win against the Sacramento Kings, but the two sides don’t seem to be on the same page just yet.
Last week, James seemingly hinted at retirement with his comments on playing the NBA Christmas Day game. But could it just be him not wanting to play for the Lakers anymore?
If James is done with the Lakers, why not consider a trade to another team? And Bill Simmons has an idea that could reinvigorate his career.
Bill Simmons spoke on his podcast about making the NBA more exciting by shaking up two of the biggest teams in the league.
In a wild idea, Simmons pitched the Golden State Warriors trading Jimmy Butler to the Los Angeles Lakers to land LeBron James.
“How do you make the league more fun? You have a team that nobody is excited about with the Lakers and a team that feels dead with the Warriors. LeBron for Jimmy Butler. That’s it.
“It feels like a ‘for the good of the sport’ trade. Just more fun. The Warriors aren’t fun. I don’t see a scenario where they become fun.
“Now you put LeBron on the team with Curry. LeBron is reinvigorated, and who knows? Butler is probably a better fit with Luka and Reaves anyway…
I think Golden State would probably do that. Because LeBron is an expiring contract. Maybe they throw out one more year.
If you’re the Lakers, you can lock in the Butler contract for another year, because all they care about is two years from now.
“Maybe Butler is a better fit with what they have anyway. LeBron doesn’t really seem like he wants to be on the Lakers. That’s my take.”
This trade, while highly unlikely to ever occur, would give both sides exactly what they need to turn their season around.
While his effort level during the regular season can be inconsistent, Jimmy Butler is an excellent two-way player, especially come playoff time. On top of that, he gives the Lakers an inside presence as a scorer.
As for LeBron James, adding him next to Stephen Curry creates a dynamic pairing that can dominate the opposition, despite their advanced age.
All anyone has to do is go and look at LeBron and Curry’s chemistry from the Olympics to know just how well the pairing would work.
On top of that, LeBron, despite being 6’8, can play the center position, something the Warriors can benefit from given their lack of options at the position.
