Bill Simmons predicts LA Lakers ‘soap opera’ season after Deandre Ayton signing

Bill Simmons isn’t feeling as optimistic about the LA Lakers’ future after they signed Deandre Ayton.

The Los Angeles Lakers finally landed the center they’ve been looking for. After he cleared free agency waivers, Deandre Ayton signed with the Lakers for $16 million.

Ayton became the Lakers’ top priority when he became available. So much so, that the Lakers allegedly negotiated poorly with Dorian Finney-Smith.

Finney-Smith would opt to go to the Rockets, thus making sure the Lakers lose one of their best two-way wing players ahead of the new season.

The Lakers did sign Jake LaRavia as a replacement, but that might not be enough to make up for the loss of Finney-Smith.

But do the Lakers have enough to mount a championship challenge next season? According to Bill Simmons, they’re far from being competitive.

Bill Russell says LA Lakers headed for disaster season after poor offseason

Bill Simmons discussed the LA Lakers’ free agency moves so far. Rather than applaud their signings, Simmons lambasted them for what they’ve done so far.

He pointed to their lazy approach to re-signing Finney-Smith as a sign of impending doom. Add to that, LaRavia as their only new signing means the Lakers just won’t have enough to compete at a high level.

“The Lakers are going to be a capital F f****** soap opera. The Finney-Smith thing? I think the Lakers thought he was coming back. And that they were going to get a center.

“And that was going to be their summer plan. Instead, they lose him. They have to pivot to LaRavia, whom they probably could have gotten anyway.

“This is a disaster for them. They’re not even close to the top four in the West.”

Rob Pelinka has wasted yet another offseason

It’s hard not to agree with Bill Simmons here. The Lakers’ roster as presently constructed is just not good enough to compete for an NBA championship.

Outside of Ayton, who is a wildcard himself, the Lakers haven’t made any moves that have made them better than they were last year.

The Lakers are trying to rival the Warriors for Al Horford. Landing him would be a big boost, given his championship pedigree and that he is another option at center.

But the Lakers are lacking at a key position. They have no two-way wing players. The OKC Thunder’s championship win this year showed how important two-way wings are for any team vying for a championship.

Rob Pelinka must try and get creative if he wants to salvage this offseason and give Luka Doncic and LeBron James the best chance to compete for an NBA championship.
